Aquaponics Basics and Tips

The ancient principle of aquaponics is very simple. A container of fish creates natural waste in the water. This “dirty water” acts as nutrients for plants, so the water is moved from the fishtank into a plant bed, which contains hydroponic “soil”. The soil soaks up the nutrients from the fish waste, and distributes it to the plants. The water drains out of the plant basin and is returned to the fishtank, filtered by the plants.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of designs for aquaponics systems. For the most part, these span from large systems to huge systems requiring acres of greenhouses. If you Google on aquaponics systems (or search YouTube) you will see many different designs, methods, and materials for building or obtaining aquaponic systems. We also have interactive discussions about aquaponics on our Facebook and Twitter accounts! Novices and experts are invited! Just do a SEARCH on AquaponicsTexas on Facebook and Twitter.
